Do you have or know someone that has a birthday on the Día de Los Muertos or Halloween? What kind of decorations did they have growing up at their parties? Did they dress up in a costume?
We started to think about this because when you look up Spanish party decorations, you only get Cinco de Mayo, fiesta decor or up until recently, and thanks to the movie Coco, we do see Día de Los Muertos decorations.
The problem is these decorations are not for an actual birthday, so we thought let’s make a design specifically for a Día de Los Muertos birthday.
The first thing we did was go onto Canva. If you don’t know about Canva, you are missing out! It is the best user-friendly and free application to do so many designs. (And no, this post is not sponsored, but we need to give credit where it’s due).
Back to the decorations, on Canva we searched Day of the Dead, and Mexico, and found beautiful designs for the banner. Instead of doing your traditional clean-cut border, we incorporated flowers and a hat that is very much a part of Mexican culture. The idea was to have the Día de Los Muertos inspiration, but for your birthday, not to look like other Día de Los Muertos themes, makes sense? The banner pictured here is Feliz for “Feliz Cumpleaños”. The template allows for English, as well as other wording.
We also love a napkin ring, so we used the same flower design from the banner and incorporated a skull.
What brings the Día de Los Muertos theme to life is the party supplies.
Use a black tablecloth and black plates, which we found at Dollar Tree.
